Top Friulian Merlot from the guerrilla winemaker Ricco
The likeable young winemaker Ricco De Candido is a wild guy, farms less than 2 hectares and more importantly: he understands the winemaker's trade very well! In addition to his wines made from local grape varieties such as Friulano and Schioppettino, he was able to establish his Merlot Vigne Alte as the flagship of Doi Mats. His Merlot grapes, which he cherishes and cares for like diamonds, grow on the plateau of one of the highest hills of the Friuli Colli Orientali DOC appellation.
It's no longer a secret that Friual Merlot can. However, the WeinHaus crew would go so far as to claim that this Merlot from high altitude can play in the top league. He behaves like an illegitimate child of Pomerol and Tessin and impresses with a grandiose depth of aroma and a storage potential that should be well over 10 years. At the same time, it is already a real treat.
In terms of taste, this wine focuses on red plums, sour cherries, dark chocolate and vanilla. The first tobacco-like ripe notes can also be seen.

Das 2 Hektare kleine Weingut Doi Mats von Enrico "Ricco" De Candido verkörpert die Philosophie vom WeinHaus perfekt: Klein, aber fein, leicht "nerdig" veranlagt, gleichzeitig verspielt im Habitus, mit viel Humor gespickt, und vor allem im Dienste der Gastfreundschaft und des guten Weins. Was uns aber von Ricco unterscheidet ist, dass wir zumindest über eine Webseite verfügen. Auf derartigen Schnickschnack verzichtet er gern und bleibt damit dem Image als Garage- oder Guerilla-Winzer gerne treu.
Doi Mats steht im friulanischen für "zwei Verrückte", als Verrückter im positiven Sinn sieht sich Ricco gerne. Der zweite Verrückte soll demnach sein Mentor Enzo Pontoni sein. Seine lokale Verwurzelung verbindet er mit einer für sein junges Alter sehr diversen Weinerfahrung, denn er hat unter anderem auch bereits in Neuseeland oder Kalifornien gearbeitet.
Gesamthaft produziert Doi Mats nur zirka 4000 Flaschen, rund 10% davon lagern bereits im WeinHaus (Tendenz: steigend).
